Among the various versions of the mayonnaise invention the most realistic one says that this process took place in the French town Mahon in 1757 when the British invaded the French lands. The French army got a big problem with delivering foods, and the only things that had left were oil and eggs. When everyday omelettes had bored, Duck de Richelieu ordered the cook to make new unordinary dish out of the left products. Thereby, a new sauce was made which had gentle and piquant taste. The soldiers admired new product. So, it was made a decision to name this sauce in honour of the port Mahon – ‘mahonnaise’.
 

  Another version states that 1782 Duke Louis won back the town of Mahon from the British. The banquet was given after the fight. All those present tasted a sauce out of natural products for the first time. Afterwards the sauce was brought to Europe where it was called Mayonesa (French ‘mayonnaise’).
